OYO CHIEF JUDGE SECURES RELEASE OF 78 INMATES TO EASE PRISON CONGESTION

The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, grants freedom to 78 inmates across custodial centres in the state as part of efforts to decongest correctional facilities and ensure the swift administration of justice.

The two-day exercise, held from Tuesday, April 14 to Wednesday, April 15, 2026, takes place at the Agodi and Abolongo Custodial Centres. The initiative aligns with the powers vested in the Office of the Chief Judge under Chapter 40 of the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which authorises periodic review of inmate cases and release where necessary.

“This is an uncommon favour,” Justice Akintola told the inmates at both facilities. “Today, God has shown you mercy. Many are still in custody, yet grace found you. Reflect on this opportunity and do not take it for granted.”

Although the Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima, is unavoidably absent due to an official assignment, she is represented by Hon. Justice A. L. Akintola, Hon. Justice M. I. Sule, Hon. Justice O. A. Adetujoye, and Hon. Justice J. O. A. Adepoju. The exercise is led by Hon. Justice A. L. Akintola.

Speaking during the exercise, Justice Akintola states that the visit aims to ease congestion in correctional facilities while upholding justice. At the Agodi Custodial Centre, 40 inmates regain freedom out of a total of 957 inmates, while 38 inmates are released from the 328 inmates held at the Abolongo Custodial Centre.

Those released include inmates awaiting trial for bailable, capital and non-capital and offences, as well as individuals with serious health conditions.

The Deputy Controller of Corrections, Mosunmola Olorunduro, commends the synergy between the Oyo State Judiciary and the Nigerian Correctional Service, noting that such collaboration strengthens the justice system.

Justice Akintola congratulates the freed inmates and urges them not to take the opportunity for granted. He advises them to refrain from seeking revenge against complainants and to embrace the second chance given to them. He further cautions against returning to criminal activities, warning of more severe consequences.

He adds that the Chief Judge provides financial support to assist the released inmates in returning to their respective destinations.
